Illumos Announcement Stream

For those who can't access the webinar for some reason, as listed on the Illumos announcement page, we're going to try to mirror the audio stream.

Until it's time for the webinar to start, you'll hear some nifty, repetitive, music on hold. Then, it'll go silent for a moment when we connect to the webinar, and then you'll be dropped in (hopefully for the duration!).

Note that this is mostly for people who want to listen to the webinar but can't for whatever reason, be it that you're not running a supported operating system, you won't be near a computer (but you have a phone or something that can take streaming audio), you're not in the United States and the cost of the long distance call is prohibitive, or whatever. There are only a limited number of listener slots available, so please think of the people who really need it, if you don't and you see the server's getting full. You also won't see the video and slides which accompany the presentation.

You will find the server status page at http://bruno.greenviolet.net/ and the stream at http://bruno.greenviolet.net/illumos.m3u .

If there are problems with the stream, please tweet @lewellyn on twitter or email matt@greenviolet.net.

The Future is Bright for OpenSolaris

We've had inquiries as to why our updates have ceased. Well, pretty much, everything we want to talk about, we want to talk about concurrently with the next OpenSolaris release.

Unfortunately, Oracle has yet to go public with any information on when that's happening, so we've been quiet...

However, there's a new project afoot called Illumos which looks like it may speed up our schedule!

Since things haven't been announced yet, there's nothing for us to really say right now, besides, tune in on August 3rd! You can find more on the Illumos announcement page, as the time nears.

Solaris 8 is DEAD! Even OpenCSW says so.

FINALLY! OpenCSW, one of the few ways to get modern software onto ancient Solaris releases, has announced that they're no longer supporting Solaris 8.

Article Ideas?

So, there are lots of things that can be written about, and not enough time to get them all written. There have been lots of nebulous suggestions made as to what people would like to see as articles. Leave comments to this article with what you want to see, and we'll take it as feedback toward where to focus.

Upcoming articles currently being written include one on virtualizing OpenSolaris, another about Windows Server 2008R2 Web Core, and one about Microsoft Business Online Productivity Suite. (By the way, if you have questions about BPOS in the mean time, please feel free to contact us!) Surely, there's more that people want to know about?

Emulation News: SFEmednafen (and more?)

In the past 24 hours or so, Mednafen 0.8.D-rc1 (the latest release candidate) has been pushed into spec-files-extra. If you use SFE and are a fan of video game console emulation, please svn up and test it! Mednafen is a CLI-driven multiple console emulator (NES, Sega Master System, PC-Engine, WonderSwan, and many more). For information on how to use it, please see their documentation. Note that no ROMs are provided, and we trust you won't use it for any illegal purposes. Also, as OpenSolaris still has no joystick support, you're stuck with using the keyboard. Sorry!
